3.2.5 PREDECESSORS/SUCCESSORS

Any activity that must be completed as a prerequisite to commencing another activity is a predecessor. For example, all design activities like schematic design, conceptual design, and issuing construction documents are predecessors for construction activities. Any predecessor that is not implied by two or more predecessor relationships is called an immediate predecessor. For example, both Form and Place Foundation Walls and Erect Tower Crane are immediate predecessors of Erect Structural Steel. Every activity in a schedule has at least one immediate predecessor except the start activity or start milestone, which has no predecessors. Correctly identifying the immediate predecessors in the process of developing a network schedule is very important for producing a realistic schedule.

Activities that logically follow a predecessor are called successor activities. The start date or the finish date of a successor is controlled by the immediate predecessor(s), meaning that the successor activity has dependence upon the predecessor. Every activity, except the end activity, has at least one immediate successor. The end activity or end milestone has no successors. The immediate successors in a network schedule are implied by the list of immediate predecessors.
